Matt kind of hit it on the head, how I was trying to explain the  sound.  I 
said pinging, but the sound is more like when you go to shut the  car off and 
it diesels on for a bit.  The sound is like that kind of  knocking when I take 
off, it does it maybe twice, and then I get the clutch  engaged fully and 
start to move, then I just get smooth acceleration with no  noise.  I don't have a 
tach in the car, but idle speed after the chokes are  off seems reasonable.  
How to address the rich mixture at idle, if that  might be the problem?
