Since there simply aren't any factory new Corvair engines with factory new carbs, distributers, etc, out there being driven, the stuff in a manual may or may not apply to your particular case -- the 
     "Do it again  until the  noise stops"
idea is what you need to pursue, "it" being any number of possible solutions.

IF retarding the timing doesn't work, try advancing it; if leaner doesn't work, try richer, try 93 octane from different suppliers, etc. Safe-gard is always a viable option.  The wrong "noise" *can* destroy an engine.
