It's pretty much been answered... but while the car was US designed, it 
was completely built in the UK and used existing BMC mechanicals to keep 
the production costs down.. Early models used the early BMC A-series 
while later models used the early B-series engines...

I consider the BMC A-series to be one of the "great" engines... in the 
same category as the SBC. The B-series... not so much. ;-)

Our own Larry Claypool is a real authority on these wee beasties...
