Not a shock absorbing shaft, but Rick at Corvair Motorsports installed a universal joint midway in the shaft on our 65 MOnza.  It's an "early LM", with the long shaft.  I believe this to be a firly routine modification for racers.  The theory is that if you hit anything with the frontend, the shaft will buckle, rather than pushing up through the car.
