<VV> Re: VirtualVairs Digest, Vol 24, Issue 54

Alright, I've already proven my ignorance. A quick glance at the shop manual shows that the valve goes directly into the back of the cylinder. So I'll need to replace that, which doesn't seem quite as daunting.

Sure, I have brake lines new in the box. I also have brake hoses. The reason these are still in the box and not on the car is because I CANNOT get the old lines off. That will present a major problem for me as I try to finish up this project.

Does anyone have any good tips for getting these off? Penetrating fluid has done nothing.

My flare wrenches slide along the fittings and grip them in the next position without actually moving them at all. This is infuriating. It makes me want to cut off all of the parts, drill two new holes in the trunk, and make my own way. How un-advisable is that?

If you lower the engine, any standard harmonic balancer can be used. No
need for the special tool. The special tool saves several hours of R & R
time. 30 minutes tops with tool, typically 15. But, as you say it helps
to know how the pieces come off and go back together!

I recall the caption under of photo in an aerodynamics book I had at work.
"corvair in the Convair wind tunnel." So somewhere out there is ( or
used
to be ) actual wind tunnel data.

These days we could more probably learn about as much with the right
instrumentation and careful road testing.

"GM did do wind tunnel testing on the 60 and I have some of it, too little.

There are several wind tunnels that can be used for automobiles and even
some
that are exclusively used for cars. I friend of mine from college worked in
the GM tunnel.

I have done "coast down" tests to estimate the drag of the Corvair using a
G-Tech. Haven't figured out how to measure lift on the road, yet...

Ned"

Picture I saw was of a late model. Lift measurements? Hmmm. First wild
idea would be to dynamically measure ride height or suspension travel front
and rear. You could measure weight vs. height change at rest, then measure
the average height on suspension position with sort variety on measurement
system. Might be electromechanical, position servos, optical rangefinder
etc.

Might I suggest high temp satin black. It has a nice sheen but not a

Subject: <VV> How many? now paint

Howdee. First just before issue 49 arrived I was thinking we are all telling
how many corvairs we have and I am enjoying it immensly, but is anyone
keeping track? The discussion started because someone suggested we total up
the member's vairs. BTW I am another one with only one (65 cpe.pg,110hp).
But I do have a Meyers Manx, 63 VW chassis but Vair 110 eng. It is currently
in pieces being painted. It might just be done by spring.

Speaking of paint. I am holding off on my 65 right now as I need to install
windshield. But first I need to repaint the dash. So much easier without
windshield. My question is does anyone have a good suggestion for the paint.
Right now spray cans are fine. Something in Dupli-Color? It is a black
interior. I probably don't want a gloss, or other end of scale flat black. I
am not looking for perfection as I probably will apply a pad in future.

Thanks again, Keith Woodke.

Ned,
You should know by now that the fellow is most likely looking for one for an
aircraft... that's what they're told to ask for... a 65 or later 110
non-smogger.... I've sold a few engine blocks over the years to some of those
guys... they have to tear them down completely anyway, so I got rid of several
blocks I had but didn't need... and a few 110 heads.... from what I heard they
run into people who either won't sell them a running engine (which if *I* was
gonna fly in the sky with one I'd make sure EVERYTHING was up to snuff) or
people don't want to sell *anything* to them.....
I'm all for having new "enthusiasts" in the hobby... I see it as being no
different than having a Devin or Avenger, or for that matter a Wayne 100 boat in
the club.... but there will always be those who will disagree.
Just my two cents....

Actually, sometimes I tend to think that the fleet could be just a
*little bit* smaller...

Frankly, the only reason there are so many here is because there's a
place to put them all.

Good points Joel.

I would just add the ratio of buyers to cars.

On one segment from Scottsdale it was mentioned that there
were 1100 cars and 5000 buyers at the auction. Pure genius indeed.

I believe he was saying that he has actually sold LM turbo 'verts for
upwards of $50K.

I wish people would realize that B-J prices are not a real reflection of the
everyday market for almost any car's value. I'm not saying that the B-J
prices are wrong, quite the contrary. I think they are a reflection of the
B-J market. Those guys go to extraordinary lengths to facilitate the
bringing together an exceptional selection of cars and buyers. Folks are
paying a premium for that.

If I had the dough (which I don't) and if I had the desire (which I don't)
to purchase, say, a '63 split window Fuelie Vette in red with a white
interior, (this is a hypothetical car) I could spend hours of my time and
wait years to find that car. Time is money, and especially if you have the
wherewithall to purchase a car like that. It's just easier to have B-J
bring you three examples to choose from, and you pay what you gotta pay to
get it. But you'd be a fool to think you could turn around and go back to
easternarmpit/state and put it in the local autotrader and get what you paid
for it at B-J.

This show is pure genius. Craig Jackson gets to get paid to take a tour of
the US, building contacts and his roster of potential cars to bring to his
auction block. Pure genius.

Regards,
Joel
