I don't think the side-exiting exhaust had anything to do with exhaust
gases being sucked into the heating system.  Instead, it's likely for
additional silencing.  The measurably longer exhaust pipe achieved with
the bent, side-exiting pipe adds significant silencing.  The turbo
doesn't need the additional silencing, so the exhaust exits out the
rear.  If Chevrolet had been all that concerned with exhaust gases
entering the heating system, they would have used a heat exchanger
instead of taking the hot air directly off the exhaust manifold.  Of
course that would have added additional cost, so economics won out over
safety.
