That is the big wire from the center of the distributor cap to the coil. 
Ground one of the power leads and something bad is likely. (considering 
some of the questions lately, this distinction may be necessary).

Better yet just disconnect the 12v lead from the engine harness to the coil 
(+) terminal. Then there are no big voltages floating around.
