   One would think the general conversation at a car club convention 

Would be primarily about cars. One could be quite mistaken.

  At a recent convention, I was eavesdropping on conversations in the Hospitality Room. Among the jigsaw puzzle solvers, the snack eaters, and the ones recovering from walking or standing hours in the sun (watching boring car related events) were animated discussions of sewing, quilting, gardening, and the Atkins diet.

   We gear heads sometimes forget that there is more to life than stainless molding and radical camshafts. 

   Our wives and significant others generously accompany us to car related gatherings, while their interests may lie elsewhere. My wife even goes with me to performance workshop events. She’s never really related to me what she gets out of it; but I appreciate it.

    We have gone to several Sports Car Club banquets where the unveiling of her latest quilt rocked the house.  This also happens on our music related outings. What a nice way to be upstaged! 

   Some of my greatest pleasures are watching her in her sewing room or working in her flower garden . I have accompanied her without too much pain to major quilting shows and workshops.

   A few years back I interviewed the men in our group about their non Corvair/Car related hobbies and was amazed by their diversity (violins, classic musical instruments, Ancient radios, etc.). Why would it surprise me to find the same diversity in the women?

   I believe that it would be to our advantage, entertainment , and education to “eavesdrop” on the many non car related activities going on right under our noses. How many noticed the member’s grandchildren playing the piano and trombone last year? How about the groups that show up for the “sing a longs”. If I had know that the musical gathering would have attracted so many ladies, I would have stayed with it much longer in my youth.

   Our convention agena this year has many activities listed for the ladies; kudos to the organizers. How about a little ladies tea? An award for a 50s 60s style show to cap the night?
