<VV> pilot bearing/bushing

In the 1970's Johnny Johnson an off road racer from San Diego area
who used Corvair engines sold a roller bearing pilot shaft bearing.
I installed one. Saw no value or detriment in its use. Since have
used the oilily. In an anecdotal comment an old VW dealership
mechanic told me the early VW's had a bearing then switched to
bushing. He recalled that when the pilot shaft bearing "froze" to the
shaft, splitting the transaxle/engine could be horrendous. Don't
suppose that would occur on a Corvair since even if the pilot shaft
was fused to the bearing, the transaxle should separate.
