Ray,  The pilot bushing has one advantage over a bearing as far as I'm  
concerned and this that it is softer than the shaft.  If the bushing fails  (too 
soon in my book) you won't tear anything up.  If a pilot bearing goes  bad the 
shaft can be worn.  The bearings last longer and I may put one in  someday, but 
I've stuck with bushings so far.  
 
I'm sure others will have experience with bearings that will help.
