<VV> New strange noise

I have a 65 turbo coupe with the 66 4-speed.  Today, I was pulling  
away from a stoplight at an average speed and as I put it in second I  
felt the gears engage but in the very last part of the shifter travel  
I heard a *grind* with a little *ting* at the end.  It was short,  
small, quick.  After that, I was able to feel mechanical thumping  
when the car was moving under load, especially when pulling away from  
a stoplight.  The noise and feel disappear when coasting or when the  
clutch is in.  It is especially noticeable when pulling away from a  
stop.

I went under the car and I checked the diff, trans, and u-joints, and  
on external observation everything looked ok and mechanical  
clearances were fine too.

Any ideas?
