<VV> fuel pump

Do fuel pumps stop working all at once, or intermittently until dead? My 69  
just started dying like no fuel. If it sits for a few minutes it may start or  
may not. Starting fluid lets it start and run a little bit(on gas) then it 
dies  out. Disconnected a line coming out of the pump and it squirts gas when  
cranking. clear filter next to the starter is about 1/3 full. What do you all  
hink?
