My direct drive is out in my toolshed. I don't hear it AT ALL! Nor does it  
have any cold weather issues like an oiled compressor would.

for the first 30 years of my automotive career I had a 20 gallon  2hp single
stage compressor that painted many cars and busted many  nuts.  My single
recommendation is to get a belt-drive  compressor.  The High-speed wail of a
direct drive unit will drive  just about anyone nuts.  I had a 30 gallon
two-stage direct drive for  about a week and couldn't stand it.  I returned
it to Sears and got a  belt drive and have never looked back.
