Jeff, short answer, My wife's '69 110 PG has 170,000 miles on it and all original internal parts, only resealed.  The 140 engine seems to be more prone to do this. 
   
   Dropped valve and /or seat= aluminum head and steel (STELLITE?)  insert pressed into the aluminum. lots of cures for this. Some cost $$$.

Sounds like a common/ recurring problem.

I never to my recollection heard of this malady in the small-block 
world.

What is it? How common is it? Is there a way to prevent it or at 
least lessen it's likelihood? Should I live in fear that my engine is 
going to "drop a valve" at any minute?
