You can't compare the price of today's Corvetter with 1957's just based on inflation.  Did the 1957 have fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, air bags, CD stereo, etc??  Nope, it was just a basic little sports car.  All cars today have so much more in them then their equivalents from yesteryear.  

Today's house prices?  They're coming back down a little in most places but we experienced a significant housing price bubble recently so again, the inflation index is only going to get you so far.
