The term "Synthetic" can give you anything from a Group III to mixtures of
group IV and group V.  Castrol Syntec was the first (I believe) to call
group III synthetic, and they won the law suit Mobil launched for false
advertising.

 

A lot of "synthetics" are group III, and in many applications give the same
performance.  In motor oils I prefer a mixture of group IV and V.

 

In the end, it is performance that counts.  Results on Used Oil Analysis,
temperatures, etc.
