Basically you hit the nail on the head with that, but not necessarily by
saying SL or SJ.  Stick with a CI-4 and you have excellent additive
protection.  Stick with Synthetic or Group II and you will have the HTHS
(shear stability) that will protect your cams and bearings.  The minimums
you mention are really not minimums.  With a group II you can still get a
CI-4 formulation with 1250 ppm, where you need 1400 plus boron to get you
the same rating in group I.

 

The API limits are not really based on content, but performance in real
tests, extrapolated across base oil groups.  Actually they dropped a lot of
group I base oils from the CI-4 testing, knowing it was not worth while.
