yes,it can be done both in/out of car,,either way,like Chuck said,things need to be "in place'' to put it back on...seems to make no difference,in or out,sometimes you get lucky,sometimes you...do it again...pix are nice,but what you really want to see are the needles on both the counter gear,and the clutch gear-end of mainshaft OD..it sounds like it's out,so you can ::1)leave it alone,2) not put the parts back in,so the buyer can R/R it,or 3) tear it down,clean and replace worn parts -for more $...from my notes,early 3spd's use the same counter shaft needles,and early 4spd's use the same clutch gear needles,one less in each row...Tom Z,acorns
