Back in 1976, I had a new Pontiac Grand Prix. It was a typical hot July day.
(Even in Minne-snow-ta it gets hot in July)
My wife had stopped at my folks house and my dad had given her a package
of frozen fish fillets from his recent fishing trip. Can you see where this is goin?
Anyhow, after about 5 hours or so of sitting in the hot sun with the windows up,
the interior of the Pontiac didn't exactly have that new car smell. I pulled the
carpeting out and washed it, and washed it, and washed it. No good. As soon
as the car sat any time with windows up in the sun, the gagging smell was there.
My mother told me to pulverize some charcoal briquettes and sprinkle them on
the carpet, close the windows, and let it sit in the sun for a day or so.
Worked like magic. All I had to do was vacuum the charcoal crumbs out of the
carpeting.

Never tried it on a musty car, but I would think the results should be similar.

Sold the Grand Prix but kept the wife. She's been with me (40 years) longer than
any of my Vairs (36 years). She's a keeper! :-)
