I've noticed this as well and came to the same conclusions that you did. 
While I've not yet tried the new Super Plus plugs in a Corvair, I have 
used them in other vehicles (I'm a big fan of the Supers and use them in 
a lot of cars) where they look and act identical to the Supers they 
replaced.
