<VV> rebuilding carbs, how to replace accel pump diaphragm?

I'm rebuilding my carbs with Clark's minor rebuild kit... and I can't see how I'm supposed to slip that diaphragm onto the accelerator pump.  Do I need to lube it up with some kind of superduper slick stuff?  I'm afraid it won't stretch enough.

Any suggestions?
