Hey guys (and gals),
In the last 18 years of playing with Corvairs I've run across maybe a dozen 
of the thermostat brackets that have square nuts welded to them, exactly for 
that purpose. I just removed a good thermostat from one yesterday, to replace a 
bad one in the 64 sedan... it looks like the bolts would be 1/4-20... like so 
many others used on the Corvair...
One other note, all of these have been on older shrouds, as they have all had 
the long rod for the door (not the short rod used on the LMs)...
I don't have any idea if this was a dealership modification or what, but I 
can probably furnish a picture of the bracket I removed the thermostat from... 
sorry, I don't have the shroud it came from.
