Corvair drivers test skill

on historic road course

?

Brian O'Neil, president of North East Corvair Council (NECC), has agreed in principle to a partnership arrangement with California Arizona Racing (CAR) for June 22, 2008, Corvair Time Trials at Streets of Willow Springs road course, Willow Springs International Raceway.

?

This guarantees that the first?California track event for Corvairs only will move forward.

The race against the clock is open to any Corvair owner or driver and does not require a race prepared car or track experience.? Drivers on the historic 1.8 mile road course in Rosamond, CA, will test their skills in a variety of classes.

?

NECC, a CORSA chapter,?is the group with broad experience for over 20 years producing time trials and autocross for Corvairs principally in the northeast and midwest.?They historically produce events in conjunction with CORSA?conventions, including?at Portland International Raceway in 2005.?

?

CAR, a CORSA chapter in formation, is comprised of a dozen experienced Corvair competitors and event producers?organized to keep alive the racing heritage of Corvairs with?fun events.?Jack Pinard is acting president. He is well?known for his efforts introducing Camarillo Airport autocross and many years?organized the Poppy Run tour, which was the west's largest Corvair driving event.?

?

Corvair Time Trials?will be on Sunday preceeding the Monday-Friday June 23-27 Corvair Society of America (CORSA) International Convention at Seaside Park, Ventura County Fairgrounds, Ventura, CA.? The parent organization is based in Lemont, IL, and has over 118 chapters with over 5,200 members.? Corsa West of Los Angeles is host?for 2008.

?

Only 60 drivers of Corvair bodies or powered cars can participate. Deposits of $50.00 are now being accepted. The balance of $100.00 with completed registration form will be due April 1, 2008.? Checks or money orders payable to Corvair Time Trials should be mailed to Jack Pinard, 116 E Garden Green, Port Hueneme, CA 93041. corvairjack at verizon.net

?

Pinard said the NECC-CAR agreement provides that CAR will complete chapter formation and incorporation in a reasonable time, provide some manpower?and guarantee the required number of registrations to insure profitability.? NECC, he added, will supervise tech inspection, classes?and timing.?

?

Cars are checked for good mechanical condition, brakes and tires, battery tie-down and shoulder harness. Only convertibles must have a roll bar.? All drivers must wear approved helmets. Two drivers can?enter the same car. Complete rules are available on the NECC web site: www.corvair.org/chapters/necc/

?

Corvair, called "GM's mechanical marvel' by Hemmings Classic Car magazine, was produced by Chevrolet from 1960 to 1969.? It features an aluminum air-cooled rear mounted six-cyliner engine and four-wheel independent suspension with unibody construction.? GM manufactured 1.8 million vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The line included coupes, sedans, convertibles, station wagons, passenger vans, delivery vans and pickups.

?

Stock 164 cu. in. engines produced from 80 to 180 horsepower.? Mid-mounted V-8's are a popular modification.

?

Shortly after sales began for the compact car, owners discovered the excellent handling characteristics and fun-to-drive quotient.? Stock Corvairs soon were competing with European?sport cars?and winning events on road racing courses. Modified cars such as the Yenko Stinger thrilled dirvers and fans. For years they were a staple at SCCA and VARA events.? Discriminatory class rules now limit Corvair track competition.

?

CAR plans to sponsor other Corvair west coast track events based on demand.
