<VV> MANUAL TRANNY NOISE

Have a 140 4-speed...heading home from work yesterday...left a stoplight and got a "this aint right" noise when I shifted into 3rd gear...worked ok but sounded like it was spinning and not fully engaged...other gears sound fine...fortunately I was close to home so is back in garage...any suggestions on what the problem might be and how to fix?
