How He Did It Re: <VV> Dick Griffin's B Stock drag car

John,
I remember reading long ago that Griffin performed this feat by pulling
up to the starting line at FULL THROTTLE using the brakes to hold back the
car. If the race took place promptly, he usually won, but if it was delayed,
he most often lost. This clearly illustrates how important it is to fully
load the turbo even BEFORE you begin accelerating. It's rather hard to do this
with the manual trans turbo 150/180 from a dead stop. However, if you're on
the highway getting ready to pass a slower moving vehicle, you can use the
brakes to hold down your speed while you floor the accelerator pedal thereby
staying behind the car in front of you, Once it's safe to pass, you simply let
go of the brake pedal and rocket around the car in front of you at high
boost. Just be prepared to replace your brakes more frequently than normal.
With an automatic trans, you can perform this same trick at a stoplight.
Just remember to limit the time you spend at full throttle AND full brakes
since all that HP being developed turns into HEAT in the trans fluid instead
of accelerating the car. Also better be using synthetic trans fluid and have
a trans fluid temp gauge installed.

Does anyone have any particulars on how he got a Corsa turbo to turn 13
seconds flat in the 1/4, while maintaining B Stock classification?

Dick Griffin of Lansing, Michigan, twice won the NHRA national drag racing
championships in a B-Stock class turbocharged Corvair. His best time for the

standing-start quarter-mile was 13.03 seconds at 113.92 mph!
