Then the starter always responded but 
frequently with that high pitched grinding.  I pulled the starter off to 
clean up the drive assembly but it looked good and operated freely.

The solenoid is properly engaging the pinion gear in the flywheel
and is in turn delivering electric current to the starter motor.  The high
pitched grinding noise comes from an inertia clutch inside of the 
starter drive.  It is not possible to see anything wrong even with the
starter assembly removed from the car.
