if you need a laptop at home plug your monitor , keyboard , and mouse into  
the laptop.
but laptop power modules are prone to spikes also.
you can buy an "isobar" or similar unit at electronics supply houses that  
will handle just about anything short of a direct lightning hit.
i use one on most of my ham radio stuff.  got sick of battery issues  with 
ups units.
