<VV> differential parts mix question

i need to know if it is possible to run late ring gear on early carrier  
assembly   and vicey versa?? please dont ask why , i only type with  one 
finger...and it is a loooong story!  yes i know they are drilled  differently , but can 
they be swapped usably?  its either that or move my  axles out (space backing 
plates )  about 3/8 inch or more on each side... i  have had them out 1/4 
inch , but it is not enough. the late guts have extremely  low miles on them , so 
that's why all the crazy swapping of parts.  (plus  cost of new stuff 
involved)
please answer if you are sure , or have actually done this.
