If I remember correctly, I believe that Steve Goodman (Rear Engine Specialist) in Colorado has 3.08's in his 62 Spyder and baja bug (both are 180hp turbos). I believe he said that it helped put more load on the turbo to help with boost. He also said he got about 19 mpg. I've always been curious about finding a 3.08, but I would imagine that a 4-speed would be a must. Wasn't the 3.08 only offered in 63?

Does anyone have any experience w/ 3.08's in any car or trans combination? I don't ever remember even seeing them. Were they available w/ any transmission?
