That's a really good point, I don't think anyone has ever mentioned

According to one major vendor, he's gotten brand new mounts back as  
"defective" and found out the car was jacked by the engine.

There are a lot of things the shop manual doesn't tell you not to do :-)

Having said that, here's my guess:  The failed mounts are often  
caused by jacking the car under the rear engine skid plate.  I'd say  
that's the really big no-no.  Jacking under the diff might be ok,  
although I think it's really not all that convenient.
