<VV> Stored Tires

Well, to be sure, no one really knows how long they will keep. It's a
common practice to store racing tires in bags to extend their life. I have
an old (12-years+) set of autocross tires and I asked someone in that field
if there was any sense to using them. His first question was "have they
been bagged?" and my answer was "yes". He said they would/should be fine so
I used them (today) and they seem just about like 2-year old tires in terms
of their traction. W/O the bags, they would have been stones, with the
bags, you can still dent the rubber with your fingernail. OTOH, there are
those in the guv'ment who want to apply expiration dates that require them
to be removed from service at seven years...

YTMMV (Your tire mileage may vary)

Hi Craig,

I'm not real sure how long they will "keep".

Even if bagged (let's say double bagged) in opaque plastic and kept in a
dark, cool environment - just what sort of shelf life would new tires have?
I'm not a chemist or rubber specialist, but I'd be wondering just how long I

could reasonably and SAFELY extend the shelf life. Four years? More, less?

Later, JR
