Our battery charger is bad, so I'll have a new one this evening to test the tach. Thank for all ya'll's help. Could someone indulge my unbeknownst nature and explain to me just how a tach works and how the electricity runs through it?

6 cylinders X 60hz X 60 sec/min / 2 (because plug fire every other

I have no idea whether half-wave doubles or halves the result but am I
missing something?

Try this:

120 pulses X 60 sec X rev X 2 = 2400 rev
sec min 6 pulses min

OR

2400 rev X min X 6 pulses X 1 = 120 pulses
min 60 sec rev 2 min
