<VV> '62 Horn Wire

I want to remove the directional switch housing off of the steering column for painting and got hung up in removing the horn wire as the connector does not seem to fit the space where it slides through the column support.  How have you been doing this?  I've never done it before.  I had previously lowered the column to remove and renovate the dash panel assembly.  Now I'd like to do the switch housing.
