<VV> PG upshift issue

JD:
I must apologize and back up a bit. I just walked out to the garage and studied the issue again. If I am following the shop manual right, it says place the drive selector in "D" and then go ahead with the procedure of adjustment.
I am studying how the linkage behaves, and as I see it, I cannot push the manual valve piston back because the drive selector cable (with the ball at the end of it) prevents it from doing so.
I look at it and wonder if I should remove the drive selector cable (with the ball on the end of it) then see if the manual valve adjustment will work out. But I can also see how that would defeat the purpose?
And for all the searching inside the pan, I cannot see where an e-clip is to belong, nor had i found the remnants of an e-clip in the pan.
I did find a piece of a itsy bitty spring though, that's probably bad.

Loosen the nut push the valve all the way back in the valve body,
with the tang on the rod facing up tilt the rod up as far as possible
to insert. Slide the piston back hard against the tang and
tighten. If the transmission will move forward and reverse the
problem is not with the shift valve, it is with the up-shift valve.
Unless you change the transmission or the shift cable the shift valve
is never a problem. The most likely problem is a broken "E"
clip. See the Tech Guide for instructions on the repair.
