The alternate to Ebay would have been Vairbid autions but no one supported it thus it didn't catch on

It's very simple, you post your items with a price.  Buyers either  
buy the item, offer you something else, or don't buy it.  This  
advanced concept was done well in advance of eBay's Buy It Now  
pricing, and eBay Stores!
