probly bent the tip on the cable.  try loosening the cable a turn  or so and 
see if it gets better.    you might be able to  straighten it with pliers.   
(note the word MIGHT)   get the  cable down where you can see it and watch it 
as the wheels are turning.  it  does not take much of a bend to do a lot. also 
the speedo bushing may be  dry.  a job for a speedo  shop.
