Did you look in the owner's guide?  For a '66 (the book I happen to have 
handy here) it is pictured on page 15 in the open position.  I don't know 
what year car you have - but it is to the left of the oil filter and if in 
good condition, you might still be able to read the instructions printed 
(decal?) on it.
