Have you considered the "little black wire"?  That's the one that 
runs between the coil and distributor.  After many years of 
operation, the copper wires inside tend to break right where it comes 
through the side of the distributor.  That wire is constantly flexed 
at that point by the operation of the vacuum advance; copper work 
hardens and becomes brittle and the old insulation, as it hardens, 
concentrates the flexing right where it comes into the distributor.

Check it out -- you may have an intermittent connection inside that wire!
