Exactly right, Randy.

I'm a 'newbie' as well -- I joined CORSA last summer (finally a Corvair
owner again after a 30 year gap). But I did it because it was my
choice, not because of any requirement. The free "Corvair Basics" set
was attractive to me, and definitely influenced my choice to sign up for
two years.

I haven't been to a national convention, and probably won't go until
it's back in the upper Midwest. (Wasn't able to make it to Detroit
because of a scheduling conflict.) I've never participated in a race,
and probably never will. If I were to drive in an econo-rally or a
local club-sponsored ride, I'd expect my own automobile insurance to
cover me.

So what are my benefits to joining?

1) Communique. (Nice work, Mike!)
2) ???? Well, surely, there must be a second benefit somewhere.

Virtual Vairs is excellent, and I well understand (perhaps better than
most) the costs of maintaining it. But I also know there are other free
(well, advertiser supported) homes for mailing lists. If CORSA were
gone, something like Virtual Vairs would pop back up somewhere else
fairly quickly. It probably wouldn't be quite as large or as useful,
but it'd be around.

CORSA's offer to host web sites for local chapters is also nice -- and
again, I understand the costs involved in that. But local chapter web
hosting doesn't take much out of my $38/year.

I joined CORSA because it's important to me to support organizations
like this -- that's essentially altruism.

Not everyone sees it that way. In my opinion, if you (we) want to
increase membership, the right way to do it is building out that list of
benefits -- not in mandatory membership. If we deliver $38 in value,
then people will pay $38 to get it.

Like Randy said, let's go find the new members. But let's have a good
story about CORSA to sell, not a mandate.
