The only time I did a whole car (changed from metallic silver to red) I  used 
a marine paint remover.  I've heard good things about the aviation  spec. 
paint removers as well.  I would lile to try the non toxic 3M  stripper I've used 
at home sometimes, but I don't know if it will work.
