Jeff,
I use a Battery Tender plugged in to the cigarette lighter to keep the
battery at 13.5 volts so it's ALWAYS at full charge to get the car started.
That also enabled me to keep the ORIGINAL factory Delco battery (on the 1995
TransSport) going for ELEVEN years before I replaced it two years ago. That
saving more than paid for the cost of the Battery Tender.
I also have a GM block heater installed that warms up the engine block
when I have the timer turn it on about 4 hours before I need to start the car.
It only draws 400 watts so the operating cost is about 25 cents each time I
use it. It also helps bring up the heating system more quickly to warm the
driver. GM charged me $19 to add it to the option list when I ordered the
car. I highly recommend it if you live in a cold region..
You can use a dipstick heater for the Corvair to accomplish some engine
preheat.
    Good luck,

can see the generator light dim under load when you hear the click.
I tested the battery and it has 12.5 volts at rest. I then removed the
cables, cleaned off the terminal posts and the inside of the spring
cables, and then reattached them. I still got only a click sound. But
after trying for about 10 times, the starter suddenly started to engage
at its usual sound and pace.

I figured I was just lucky and that the starter and/or solenoid might be
going south, until I went to use my '66 Land Rover. That one has an
original Lucas starter and it, too, would barely turn over. It turned
briefly and then stopped. I tried it a couple of times and then finally,
it started as it usually does.
