Gene,
Wow!! What SIZE tires do you have on the rear of your Corvair to get
only 2000 rpm at 70 mph? My TransSport Minivan has 15 inch tires and only gets
67 mph at 2000 rpm. And that's with a very low numerical overall gear ratio
- something like 2.2 due to the overdrive 4th gear on the A/T with 3.1 in
the axle. Even if you have a 3.27 gear you must have TALL tires to keep your
rpm so low. Most LM Corvairs with stock size tires do about 3500 rpm at 70
mph.
That would certainly explain your good gas mileage.

I have a 65 2dr ht,95hp,3sp that I bought new. I installed a sun teck where

the blank clock was and I put 15 inch tires on the back (no rub). I like
the
looks of the 15: on the back and the 13" on the front. I can cruse 70 miles
ph at about 2000 rpm's. I get vary good gas mileage. I have been running it
this way for about 15 years. No over heating problems.
