<VV> Distributor initial settings on a 140

Frankly, I don't know what distributor is installed. The car is a '69 set up as 140 PG and body emblemed as such, but the block is RD. The Air cleaner is for a 140 SMOG engine but the A.I.R. system was removed at some time. Engine was rebuilt at the Vair shop in 2004 with new pistons, rebuilt heads and so on for the previous owner. Timing was at 8 degrees BTC when I first got it home in November, but I set it back to 4 degrees as worked through what turned out to be a bad modulator valve causing smoke & knock.

With the modulator replaced it hasn't knocked at all for a month on premium fuel so I think at this point I'll experiment with advancing the timing a little and see how it runs.

Thanks,

- Steve

One unanswered question - Timing. The initial advance setting of an engine should be based on the original application of the distributor you are using. If you are using an early (65-66) 140 motor's distributor, set the initial timing based on that of a 140 HP motor. The distributor translates engine RPM and load into a total advance curve. - Seth
