<VV> what scissor jack will work

Since I was credited with that little bit of filler in the Communique (even
though Smitty Smith is the one who told me about it), I figure I better
speak up here. The Pontiac T1000 jack is what works for me. It is not really
a scissor jack, but it combines the principles of the scissor jack with
those of a bumper jack, and acts like a common floor jack. The T-1000 jack
is larger than the Corvair jack, so storage in your Vair may be an issue,
but, in my opinion, it's much safer than a scissor jack. You are spreading
the load across two steel pads where the scissor jack concentrates the load
on only one pad.

To answer your question, the T-1000 jack I am using came from a 1986 model,
but check any of the mid '80's GM products when you're in the junk yard as
they may have been used in other models as well. One thing you want to look
at when selecting the jack is the upper pad, which will come into contact
with the under side of your car. The model I have has a raised rectangular
pad which fits under the late mode rocker panel quite nicely. Some have a
round upper pad which wouldn't work as well, again, in my opinion.

If you want pictures of the two different versions I have found, let me know
and I can forward them off-list.
