Doug,
    I'd try putting in another ignition  coil.  Yours could be malfunctioning 
due to the heat buildup and then  return to normal after it has a chance to 
cool a bit.  If you have a good  spare, it's relatively quick to try.

Intermittent point wire (assuming you're  using point). Copper wire breaks 
internally.
Clogged tank sock or  inline filter.
