<VV> GPS to measure MPG

My Honda Civic Hybrid has an instantaneous MPG meter (slider bar). It is
addictive to watch it while driving. Whenever the gas engine shuts down the
meter goes to "infinity". When the gas engine is in partial operation (some
of the valves or cylinders shut down) it reads 65-85mpg. Of course, heavy
acceleration knocks it down into the 20s or 30s. The fun is in trying to
keep the meter as high as possible while still driving reasonably. I find
the best time of day to drive is at dawn or dusk - while the air is
reasonably cool but don't need to turn the lights on. A/C take a noticeable
bite out of the mileage.

I am convinced that if every car had an instantaneous MPG meter instead of a
speedometer everybody would drive more economically - especially when gas
cost so much.

We've got a blazer with that feature in the overhead display. I played
with
it for a couple of days when we first got the car trying to see how long I
could keep the average MPG at 60 or above just after a fill up. I was
actually surprised that I could keep it there quite a while. Econorun
practice?

I had just the opposite! Friends Father needed to be driven across
Country
to his home....Kids were all afraid to drive his 98 Towncar...in 2000...

He'd had it at the dealers several times to see why his gas mileage was
sooo
bad...and getting worse with each fillup.....Hundreds of $$ later..they'd
found nothing the matter...

His Mother in Law had been my Foster Mother... so I said I'd take time off
from work and drive him....

Took off...and the Computer showed 9.7 mpg.... Asked him how to change
displays, etc....said he didn't know..

Got him to READ the manual... and we reset it..... Instant 24 mpg.......we

then went to Real Time.....and of course going down hill if you let off the

gas.. 99.9 mpg! He was amazed......and PO'd at the dealers....GGGGG
