Guys,
A while back we parted out a car with aftermarket gauges - oil pressure &
oil temperature. These are both electrical, and indicate about midscale. Is
this normal - or are they nonfunctional?
Thanks,
Andy K.

Andy - Do you mean they are sitting at mid-scale without being connected to
anything? Did you get the sending units for the gages? Electrical gages are
usually fed 12 Volts on one pin, and the sending units vary their resistance to
ground from the other pin to change the indicator. The indicator is really
reading Ohms of resistance, but is labeled in the equivalent units, like
degrees F or Lbs per square inch. So the gage doesn't really read anything unless
it is powered up with 12 volts, and a sending unit is attached on the other
end. - Seth Emerson
