<VV> Powerglide overhaul question

I am going through a PG from a car that was parted out. It has been overhauled previously at some point (I can tell because it had the aftermarket lip seal on the reverse piston) and who ever put it together didn't put the little clip back that goes in the gap of the reverse clutch retaining ring. This transmission was obviously used without the clip and I guess it worked OK and everything inside was in good shape but I can't seem find another clip to use. So what do you think is OK to leave it out? Anybody have any experience on this subject?
