A low cost solution is a small, square piece of plastic with a circle in  the 
middle that turns colors from beige to black if carbon monoxide is  detected. 
 I've used such a device manufactured by a company that calls it  "Dead 
Stop."  Google that name and "carbon monoxide" and you should easily  find a 
vendor.  I believe they're intended for use in small airplanes and  therefore often 
available in pilot shops at the airports where such private  planes take off 
and land.
