The "canary in a coal mine" was largely myth, and almost entirely a British
myth at that!  US coal mines adopted Davy Lamps (invented in 1816!) for gas
detection far faster than our British Cousins (we had "gassier"
mines)....and electronic air-samplers since before most of this list were
born.  

Humor, particularly the sarcastic variety must contain an element of
truth....and this OT thread has little "truth" in attendance, so
correspondingly lower "humor"!

FWIW, you'll find 100 fighting cocks for every canary in coal country!
